Description of the Leadership Cultivation Program
As noted above, at Bayer, employees can undertake various training programs common
throughout the worldwide Bayer Group that are conducted in English in order to cultivate
world-class human resources. Basically, future leader candidate employees participate in
these global programs conducted in English while refining their English capabilities.
However, at present, Bayer is also working on converting these global programs into Japanese as
required, so that employees who do not have such strong English capabilities can take these
programs in Japanese. This is aimed at having more future leadership candidates acquire the
ways of thinking common throughout the worldwide Bayer Group from an early stage.
For example, there is the Leadership Cultivation Program, which is conducted throughout the
worldwide Bayer Group. This is a rather large scale training program composed of modules 1, 2
and 3, with employees spending 4 days on each module for a total of 12 days in the global version
and 3 days on each module for a total of 9 days in the Japanese version. There are probably
not so many companies that would spend such a long time on just the one theme of “leadership
cultivation.” This is also a source of pride for Bayer, which values all of its employees and
works seriously on the cultivation of each and every leader.
In addition, actual training is carried out with small numbers of participants, limited to a
maximum of 15 per session, so that each and every participant can acquire a deeper level of
realization and learning. This is also nothing less than an expression of the zeal with which
Bayer thinks of its employees and values every one.
Furthermore, this training has been conducted around the world for about 30 years. This
also reflects Bayer’s strong feelings towards the cultivation of human resources that it is
important for the cultivation of people to continue providing good quality training consistently
over a long period of time.
Even stated as a single word, “leadership” contains various factors. In this training,
participants pursue in-depth study of the mind looking at the questions of what people really are
and what it takes to build better human relationships rather than being limited simply to surface
skills. In conclusion, all of the participants are able to realize and learn on a deep level
that trust is the base on which all human relationships (leadership, communication, cooperation,
conflict management, etc) are built.
Many positive responses have been received from employees who have taken this course, such as
“things that have bothered me in my everyday job such as leadership, communication and cooperation
in actual work have been improved significantly.”
In this way, at Bayer, strongly-motivated employees can undertake a good balance of global
programs conducted in English as well as local programs conducted in Japanese to study the latest
ways of thinking common throughout the global Bayer Group.
