Female MR Project
- Bayer Supports Women’s success -
What should Bayer do to promote diversity that is required by society? And, what can
the company solve the issues faced by employees and management? An answer to such questions
is the “Female MR Project”.
The project started early in 2008 initially by General Medicine Business Unit and HR.
It was recognized later as a project for Bayer as a whole. The background of the project
is: (1) women count for 60% of newly-employed MRs in the recent years (2) and despite
this tendency, female MRs leave earlier than male MRs a few years after their entries. (3) In
addition, female MRs leave earlier than male office workers because of marriage and
childbirth. This situation is not what Bayer and female MRs want. This is also
unusual at many pharmaceutical companies in Japan and is the issue that the industry should tackle.
The project team conducted a questionnaire among all of Bayer’s female MRs to collect
information on their anxieties, dissatisfactions and problems. According to the results, the
majority of female MRs want “support to work and family.” In response to the question “
Do you want to continue your current job at Bayer in 3-4 years?,” more than half of married women
answered “Yes, I do.” while 70% of single women answered “I want to quit” or “I do not know.”
Moreover, in response to the question “What do you think could be improved for you working longer
at Bayer?,” most replied: “Need more consideration of working hours during pregnancy, transfers, ”
and “support systems to manage work and private life.”
In addition to the questionnaires, many female MRs (mostly married) in Business Unit General
Medicine participated in interviews and discussions enthusiastically.
“If I have more options to work , I think that the company would be more attractive to work.”
“I would like the company to explain childcare leave procedures in detail in advance.”
“I would like that colleagues and company support and care any employees in need,
irrespective of male or female. ”
Given with a lot of opinions like this, we recognized that female MRs face the anxieties and
issues at each life stage: single, married, pregnant, childbirth, leave and return to work.
Some systems are explained below.
This activity focused the female MR issue to realize diversity in Bayer. We will
continue various activities so that employees can work energetically without any anxieties. The
next project will come soon.
